Learn the simple, foolproof method to cook whole russet potatoes in your air fryer for a perfectly crispy skin and a light, fluffy interior in under 45 minutes. This is the best air fryer potato method for quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large Russet potatoes (about 10-12 oz each)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Scrub the potatoes well under running water to remove any dirt. Dry them completely with a paper towel; moisture prevents crispy skin.
  2. Use a fork or sharp knife to pierce each potato deeply 6 to 8 times all over. This lets steam escape, which is key for a fluffy interior.
  3. Rub each potato evenly with the oil.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the kosher salt and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture generously over the oiled potatoes, rubbing it into the skin.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Place the seasoned potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if necessary.
  7. Air fry for 35 to 45 minutes. The exact time depends on your air fryer model and potato size.
  8. Check for doneness by squeezing the potato gently (use tongs or an oven mitt) or inserting a fork into the center; it should slide in easily. The skin should look deeply browned and crisp.
  9. Carefully remove the potatoes from the air fryer. Slice them open lengthwise immediately and gently fluff the inside with a fork.
  10. Serve hot with your favorite toppings for a loaded baked potato experience.

Notes

  • For the crispiest skin, do not wrap the potatoes in foil. Foil traps steam and results in soft skin.
  • If your potatoes are very large (over 14 oz), you may need to add 5-10 more minutes to the cook time.
  • To make this a complete meal, consider topping with shredded cheese, sour cream, chives, and cooked bacon bits for a loaded baked potato.
  • This recipe is a great healthy air fryer potato side dish when served simply with butter and salt.
