Make crispy, flavorful Chicken Parmesan using your air fryer for a quicker, lower-oil version of the classic dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 6 oz each), pounded to 1/2 inch thickness
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for breading)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray (olive oil or avocado oil based)
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare a breading station with three shallow dishes. Place flour in the first dish. Whisk eggs in the second dish. In the third dish, combine Panko breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Pat the pounded chicken cutlets dry with paper towels. Dredge each cutlet first in the flour, shaking off excess. Dip into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Finally, press firmly into the breadcrumb mixture to coat both sides completely.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit (195 degrees Celsius) for 5 minutes.
  4. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded chicken cutlets in a single layer in the basket, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Spray the tops of the cutlets lightly with cooking spray.
  5. Air fry for 10 minutes. Flip the cutlets carefully. Spray the second side lightly with cooking spray. Continue to air fry for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) and the coating is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Remove the chicken from the air fryer. Top each cutlet with marinara sauce, followed by mozzarella cheese and the remaining 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  7. Return the topped cutlets to the air fryer basket. Air fry at 380 degrees Fahrenheit (195 degrees Celsius) for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Pounding the chicken ensures even thickness, which helps the cutlets cook uniformly and stay tender.
  • Use Panko breadcrumbs for the crispiest texture in the air fryer.
  • Do not skip spraying the chicken with oil before cooking; this helps the breading brown properly.
