Make a crispy fish sandwich using your air fryer for a quick and healthier meal. This recipe includes instructions for perfectly breaded fish and a simple homemade tartar sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb cod or tilapia fillets, about 1/2 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Cooking spray (olive oil or avocado oil based)
  • 4 sandwich buns (brioche or potato buns recommended)
  • 4 leaves lettuce
  • 4 thin tomato slices
  • Pickle slices, for serving
  • For Tartar Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the breading station: Place flour in one shallow dish. Whisk eggs in a second dish. Mix panko breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and paprika in a third dish.
  2. Pat the fish fillets very dry with paper towels. This step helps achieve maximum crispiness.
  3. Dredge each fillet first in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Finally, press firmly into the panko mixture to coat completely.
  4. Prepare the tartar sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, relish, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and dill or parsley. Mix well and set aside.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 390 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) for 5 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded fish fillets in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they do not overlap. Spray the tops of the fish generously with cooking spray.
  7. Air fry for 10 to 14 minutes, flipping the fish halfway through the cooking time. Spray the second side lightly with cooking spray before flipping. The fish is done when the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit (63 degrees Celsius) and the coating is golden brown and crisp.
  8. While the fish cooks, lightly toast your sandwich buns if desired.
  9. Assemble the sandwiches: Place a lettuce leaf and tomato slice on the bottom bun. Top with a hot, crispy fish fillet. Add pickle slices and a generous amount of tartar sauce. Place the top bun on the sandwich.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, chill the breaded fish fillets in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before air frying.
  • Use high-heat cooking spray for the best non-stick and browning results in the air fryer.
  • If you prefer a tangier tartar sauce, substitute dill pickle relish with chopped dill pickles.
