Ingredients

Scale
  • 3-4 pound pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels.
  2. In a small bowl, combine salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper if using.
  3. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder.
  4. Place the seasoned pork in your slow cooker.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together apple cider, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, and liquid smoke if using.
  6. Pour the liquid mixture over the pork in the slow cooker.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and shreds easily with a fork.
  8. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or in a large bowl.
  9. Shred the pork using two forks.
  10. Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid in the slow cooker.
  11. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss with about 1 cup of the cooking liquid to moisten.
  12. Serve your delicious apple cider pulled pork on buns for sandwiches.

Notes

  • For an extra smoky flavor, you can add a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the liquid mixture as well.
  • If you don’t have liquid smoke, you can omit it or add a dash of extra smoked paprika.
  • The cooking time may vary depending on your slow cooker and the size of the pork shoulder.
  • Save any extra cooking liquid to add to the pulled pork if it seems dry.
