Make tender, sweet blackberry dumplings on the stovetop. This recipe yields soft dumplings swimming in a rich, juicy blackberry syrup, perfect for a warm, comforting dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, 3/4 cup of the sugar, water, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Cook for 5 minutes until the berries soften slightly and release juice. Keep warm over low heat.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a shaggy dough. Do not overmix.
  5. Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls directly onto the simmering blackberry mixture, leaving a little space between each dumpling.
  6. Cover the saucepan tightly and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and cook through.
  7. Gently stir in the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar.
  8. Serve the dumplings warm, spooning the syrup over the top.

Notes

  • For extra richness, serve immediately with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before adding them to the pot.
  • If the syrup seems too thin after cooking, remove the lid and simmer uncovered for 2-3 minutes to reduce slightly.
