You need a dessert that requires almost no effort? This foolproof cherry dump cake is the answer. Just dump the ingredients, top with butter, and bake for a warm, gooey cherry treat perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
  • 1 box (15.25 ounces) yellow cake mix (do not mix)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Pour the entire can of cherry pie filling into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread it out evenly.
  3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the top of the cherry filling. Do not stir or mix the layers.
  4. Distribute the small pieces of butter evenly over the dry cake mix layer.
  5. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the cherry filling is bubbly around the edges.
  6. Let the dump cake cool slightly before serving warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • This recipe is the definition of minimal ingredient baking; you can add a cup of chocolate chips on top of the cherry layer for a chocolate cherry dump cake variation.
  • If you prefer a slower, more hands-off method, you can cook this as a slow cooker cherry dump cake on low for 3 to 4 hours.
  • For a richer topping, substitute the butter with 1/2 cup of melted butter poured evenly over the dry mix instead of slicing it.
