You can make this classic Chicken Cordon Bleu at home without the fuss. We stuff tender chicken breasts with ham and Swiss cheese, coat them in a crispy panko crust, and bake them until golden brown. This is a family-friendly chicken dinner that tastes restaurant-quality.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 7 ounces each)
  • 4 thin slices deli ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a baking sheet or spray it with cooking spray.
  2. Place each chicken breast between two pieces of plastic wrap. Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to pound the chicken to an even 1/4-inch thickness.
  3. Lay one slice of ham and one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each flattened chicken breast, leaving a small border around the edges.
  4. Tightly roll up each chicken breast, starting from the narrow end, to enclose the ham and cheese completely. Secure the rolls with toothpicks if necessary to keep them closed during baking.
  5. Set up a standard breading station with three shallow dishes. Place the flour in the first dish. Whisk the eggs in the second dish. In the third dish, combine the Panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
  6. Dredge each rolled chicken breast first in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the beaten egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, press the chicken firmly into the Panko mixture to coat it completely.
  7. Drizzle the olive oil over the coated chicken breasts or lightly spray them with cooking spray for extra crispness. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) and the crust is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the toothpicks before serving this easy cordon bleu recipe. Serve immediately with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • If you prefer a pan-fried variation, sear the coated chicken in a skillet with a little butter and oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side before transferring to the oven to finish cooking.
  • For a creamy chicken cordon bleu twist, you can prepare a simple Dijon cream sauce to drizzle over the finished baked chicken.
  • If you are making this for a weeknight chicken dinner, you can assemble the rolls up to 4 hours ahead of time and keep them covered in the refrigerator.
