Make quick, fluffy French toast with a golden exterior using common pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (like challah or brioche)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until fully combined. This is your custard base.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter or oil.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, allowing it to soak for about 15 to 20 seconds per side. Do not over-soak, or the bread will fall apart.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast from the skillet and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter or oil as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • For a crispier edge, use slightly stale bread.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
  • Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.
