A rich, traditional German Chocolate Pie featuring a creamy chocolate base and a sweet coconut-pecan topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place the unbaked pie crust on a baking sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt.
  3. Gradually whisk in the evaporated milk until smooth.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 8 to 10 minutes. Do not boil.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Slowly temper the eggs by whisking a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan, stirring constantly.
  6. Stir in the melted unsweetened chocolate, melted butter, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  7. Fold in the flaked coconut and chopped pecans.
  8. Pour the filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the filling is mostly set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  10. Cool the pie completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a quicker version, use a store-bought graham cracker or Oreo crust instead of making your own.
  • Chill the pie for at least 4 hours before serving to allow the filling to set fully.
  • You can use sweetened condensed milk instead of evaporated milk, but reduce the added sugar by 2 tablespoons.
