Ingredients
Scale
2 lbs ground beef
1 cup bread crumbs
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
3 cups prepared mashed potatoes
1/4 cup milk (for potatoes)
2 tablespoons butter (for potatoes)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, 1/2 cup milk, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
Press the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Bake the meat layer for 20 minutes.
While the meat bakes, prepare your mashed potatoes if you are not using leftovers. Mix the potatoes with the extra 1/4 cup milk and butter until smooth.
Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the partially cooked meat layer.
Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the cheese layer, creating an even topping.
Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are lightly browned and the internal temperature of the meat reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.
Notes
You can prepare the meat mixture and mashed potatoes a day ahead and store them separately in the refrigerator. Assemble just before baking.
For a richer flavor, mix 1/2 cup of cream cheese into the mashed potatoes before topping the casserole.
Use leftover mashed potatoes for quicker preparation time.
