Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 6 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour in the melted butter and mix until the ingredients are well combined and form a crumbly mixture.
  4. Press about two-thirds of this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  5. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, and ginger.
  6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the baking pan.
  7. Crumble the remaining one-third of the oat mixture over the top of the apples.
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  10. Once cooled, drizzle the caramel sauce over the top. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
  11. Lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • For an extra cozy flavor, add a pinch of ground cloves to the apple mixture.
  • If you don’t have lemon juice, apple cider vinegar works as a substitute.
  • Make sure the bars are completely cool before adding the caramel to prevent it from melting too much.
