Make this simple, addictive sweet and salty toffee bark using only five ingredients. It requires no candy thermometer and is perfect for holiday baking or quick gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 4 cups) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or other nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring after it starts boiling.
  3. Pour the hot sugar mixture evenly over the saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Spread it quickly to coat all the crackers.
  4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the edges of the toffee are bubbly and slightly darkened.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let it sit for 5 minutes to melt the chocolate.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers using an offset spatula. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the melted chocolate now.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm. Break the toffee into irregular pieces before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, substitute milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chips.
  • If you prefer a smoother topping, use chocolate melting wafers instead of chips.
  • You can store this toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or in the refrigerator for longer storage.
