Ingredients
Scale
1 package active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1 teaspoon for yeast
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar for filling
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup strawberry jam or compote
1 cup powdered sugar for glaze
2 tablespoons milk for glaze
1 teaspoon lemon juice for glaze
Instructions
Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, 1 teaspoon sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, flour, and salt.
Add the activated yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough rises, prepare the cheesecake filling: Beat the softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on one long edge.
Spoon the strawberry jam or compote over the cream cheese layer.
Starting from the long edge opposite the border, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam closed.
Cut the log into 12 equal rolls. Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Prepare the glaze: Whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and lemon juice until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach a drizzling consistency.
Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls. Serve warm.
Notes
For a softer roll, you can let the dough rise overnight in the refrigerator after the first rise. Adjust baking time if starting from cold.
Use store-bought strawberry preserves for a quicker filling option.
If you prefer a thicker cheesecake layer, use 12 ounces of cream cheese.
