Ingredients
Scale
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Heat the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling. Remove from heat.
While the milk mixture heats, prepare the whipped topping. In a separate bowl, combine the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt.
Use a hand mixer or whisk to beat the cream mixture until soft peaks form. Do not overbeat.
Pour the hot chocolate base into two mugs.
Spoon the homemade whipped topping generously over the hot chocolate.
Serve immediately while warm, or chill the base and topping separately for an iced version.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
You can substitute any milk, but whole milk provides the best creaminess.
If you do not have a mixer, you can vigorously whisk the cream by hand until fluffy.
